{"id":523,"date":"2017-04-25T08:30:46","date_gmt":"2017-04-25T15:30:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pamsharp-fishing.com\/?p=523"},"modified":"2023-08-14T08:29:00","modified_gmt":"2023-08-14T15:29:00","slug":"oceanside-95-overnight-offshore-april-22-2017","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/pamsharp-fishing.com\/?p=523","title":{"rendered":"Oceanside 95 &#8211; Overnight Offshore April 22, 2017"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The drive to Oceanside isn&#8217;t nearly as bad as going all the way to San Diego. \u00a0There had been some early season activity on bluefin, so Danny and I decided to take a run and see if we could get in on it.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_524\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-524\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/pamsharp-fishing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/DSCN3062.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-524\" src=\"http:\/\/pamsharp-fishing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/DSCN3062-300x224.jpg\" alt=\"Guys in the bucket hunting.\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" srcset=\"http:\/\/pamsharp-fishing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/DSCN3062-300x224.jpg 300w, http:\/\/pamsharp-fishing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/DSCN3062-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-524\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Guys in the bucket hunting.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The bite had been mostly 25-30 pound fish. \u00a0We had geared up for that and heard at the last minute what they had been seeing was more in the 60 to 100 pound range, so I added a 50 pound outfit to my arsenal.<\/p>\n<p>We left early and had a pretty easy drive down. \u00a0We were the first ones there, grabbed some fish and chips and waited to board.<\/p>\n<p>We were heading to Mexico. \u00a0After everyone was on board and signed in (full boat), licenses checked or paid for, we headed to the bait receiver. Captain Rick gave a brief safety speech, introduced the crew, and went over the game plan. \u00a0We&#8217;d head pretty far south, and slowly work out way back through the day. \u00a0Have some lighter outfits to flyline, something heavier, at least 40 but preferably 50-60, with a flat fall, sniper, or bait hook and 2-3 ounce sinker on a rubber band to fish for the bigger fish at gray light or in meter marks.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_525\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-525\" style=\"width: 222px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/pamsharp-fishing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/DSCN3063.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-525\" src=\"http:\/\/pamsharp-fishing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/DSCN3063-222x300.jpg\" alt=\"Danny Lynch on troll rotation.\" width=\"222\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/pamsharp-fishing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/DSCN3063-222x300.jpg 222w, http:\/\/pamsharp-fishing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/DSCN3063-758x1024.jpg 758w, http:\/\/pamsharp-fishing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/DSCN3063.jpg 1507w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 222px) 100vw, 222px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-525\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Danny Lynch on troll rotation.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>With that, we were on our way. \u00a0Conditions \u00a0were a little lumpy on the way out, but definitely improving by morning. \u00a0The engines slowed at around 5:30, trollers out, the hunt was on.<\/p>\n<p>Long day &#8212; Slow fishing. \u00a0Danny and I ordered breakfast plates, and returned to the deck to wait and watch.<\/p>\n<p>Paddies were empty. \u00a0Metered fish scattered at the sound of the boat. \u00a0We finally found a paddy near noon that bit&#8230; \u00a0Off the bow we could see in the middle of calm waters, heavy ripples pushed up from a huge mass of fish below the surface.<\/p>\n<p>As we got closer, they vanished, only to pop up again a little ways ahead of us again. \u00a0This time Rick tried to run around the other side of them, only to have them vanish again. \u00a0The crew threw bait, we chased them several times, only to have them vanish and pop up again somewhere else.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_528\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-528\" style=\"width: 207px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/pamsharp-fishing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/DSCN3067.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-528\" src=\"http:\/\/pamsharp-fishing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/DSCN3067-207x300.jpg\" alt=\"Two nice bluefin\" width=\"207\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/pamsharp-fishing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/DSCN3067-207x300.jpg 207w, http:\/\/pamsharp-fishing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/DSCN3067-709x1024.jpg 709w, http:\/\/pamsharp-fishing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/DSCN3067.jpg 1205w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 207px) 100vw, 207px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-528\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Two nice bluefin<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Nothing hooked in all of the activity seen. \u00a0Bluefin being bluefin.<\/p>\n<p>More trolling, more searching. \u00a0We slowed up on a meter mark, the crew threw bait, we lined up along the rail, shuffling along. \u00a0Finally, one biter, then a second! \u00a0The fish took the anglers up and down the rail several times&#8230; \u00a0Wraps and tangles were quickly untangled with the help of crew following both anglers at all times. \u00a0Eventually both fish were landed. \u00a0But no more than those two were hooked&#8230;.<\/p>\n<p>By the time those two were boated, it was time to head for home. \u00a0We trolled for a little longer before Captain Rick gave the word to pull in the troll lines.<\/p>\n<p>Danny and I split a quesadilla, wrapped our gear, and I went down to sleep the rest of the way in.<\/p>\n<p>Thanks again to Captain Rick and the crew of the Oceanside 95. \u00a0A slow day of fishing, but certainly not to any lack of trying. \u00a0I can&#8217;t wait to do it again!!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The drive to Oceanside isn&#8217;t nearly as bad as going all the way to San Diego. \u00a0There had been some early season activity on bluefin, so Danny and I decided to take a run and see if we could get in on it.
